There’s a myth that’s been around the security industry forever: that the bigger the guard, the safer the venue. It’s wrong, and believing it gets venues into trouble.
What actually keeps a room calm
The skill that prevents most incidents isn’t physical - it’s the ability to read a room and de-escalate before anything starts. A guard who can have a calm word with a patron, defuse a situation and keep people moving is worth far more than one who simply looks imposing.
We select and train for composure, communication and judgement. That’s the job. Size is irrelevant if the person can’t talk to people.
Why “presence over people skills” backfires
- It escalates situations that a conversation would have settled
- It reads as confrontation to your patrons, which hurts the experience you’re trying to create
- It puts your staff, your patrons and your licence at greater risk, not less
What to look for instead
When you’re choosing a security provider, ask how they select and train their people, how they handle incidents, and whether they lead with de-escalation. Ask whether the team will be briefed on your venue, supervised through the night, and documented afterwards.
That’s the difference between a body at the door and a team that actually protects your venue. It’s why our mantra is simple: calm holds the room.
